Until this month, owner Steven Farence had been bringing in outside help during busy stretches rather than booking homeowners three months out. Both crews are company employees, and Farence Fencing does not subcontract installation work. The second crew also brings chain link experience to the company for the first time.
The company builds wood, vinyl, aluminum, ranch and chain link fencing, along with gates and repair work, across a service area that runs from Fernandina Beach south to Palm Valley, north along Highway 200 through Callahan and west to the Baldwin line. Recent growth has come largely from new construction along the Interstate 10 corridor, according to the company. Its reputation was built on custom wood fencing, particularly horizontal designs that call for framing carpentry rather than the assembly of pre-made sections. Steven Farence worked as a carpenter and later managed high-rise condominium repairs and permitting before starting the business.
Fences are stick-built, meaning posts, rails and pickets are cut and installed individually on site instead of arriving as prefabricated panels. That approach lets the crew reject boards with knots or splits before they go up, and it is the basis for a 10-year workmanship warranty on wood fencing, against the one-year term common among competitors in the market. Past customers also get priority during storm season, when repair requests spike and schedules across the region fill quickly. Rather than compete for slots at the busiest time of year, previous customers move to the front of the repair list. The company installs driven-post fencing as well, a method that anchors posts into the ground without digging or concrete, on properties where soil conditions favor it.
Operations run out of a warehouse on the north side of Jacksonville, and the business is family-run. The owner’s mother schedules estimates and answers the phone, and his younger brother leads the install crew.
