TORONTO, Aug. 27, 2026 /CNW/ — In 2025, Kia Canada entered into a partnership with Variablegrid Adaptive Power Inc., a Canadian energy technology leader specializing in electric vehicle (EV) energy management. Their system helps to reduce costly electrical upgrades using patented adaptive load management technology, making EV charging possible for more homes.

Today, Kia Canada is pleased to announce an expansion to this partnership through the Clean Fuel Regulation (CFR) program, called Variablegrid Plus. From now until 2030, customers can sign up for a 3-year subscription at their local EV-certified Kia dealership, that will return $0.10/kWh for at-home EV chargingⁱ. To contextualize this incentive, a Kia customer driving 20,000 kilometres a year with an EV4 could get up to $360 paid out yearlyⁱⁱ. For customers who combine the 3-year subscription and a Variablegrid in-home charger (Energy Management System bundle), they can receive up to $350 in additional savings upfront for the hardware.

What is the Clean Fuel Regulation program?

The Clean Fuel Regulation program is a federal initiative, which requires producers and importers of gasoline and diesel to gradually reduce the lifecycle carbon intensity of their fuels through 2030. Fuel companies can comply by reducing emissions through ‘end use switching,’ which assumes that an EV replaces a combustion vehicle on the road, that helps to reduce CO2 emissions that would otherwise be generated.

How does Variablegrid’s energy management system work and what type of home benefits from it?

Variablegrid helps to reduce the complexity of installing a home charger in older homes that may not have enough electrical power to spare for fast, Level-2 EV charging. Using patented adaptive load management technology powered by artificial intelligence, Variablegrid’s Energy Management System (EMS) monitors real-time energy usage and automatically adjusts power to the EV charger based on available capacity. Savings can be realized in the form of a discount upon the purchase of a Variablegrid charger and management system through a Kia dealership, when bundled with the 3-year subscription. Once the 3-year subscription activates and owners begin to charge at home, they will receive $0.10 per kilowatt-hour. Once it reaches a $50 threshold, the funds can be withdrawn from the Variablegrid account.
