I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and a sense of respect was instilled in me from the womb. We loved our elders. We listened with a heart to the lineage, to the people who came before us, who were doing their best to make it to the next day with hatred all around them.
The Red Zone
In 1921, Tulsa’s Greenwood district, Black Wall Street, was destroyed in the Tulsa Race Massacre. We came to find out that our childhood home sat on an unmarked grave. Yes, we were raised in the Red Zone of the atrocity.
There was never a spooky feeling in that house. It was always love and care. I believe there was an air of love from the spirits of the Black people who were killed, love for me and my family. And that love rolled over into everything we experienced inside the house.
Love Before Pride
My grandmother was full of love before pride, love before ego, love before her own pain. Maybe it lived in her because of all the hatred outside the house. Love is what helped her survive, and that love and respect was instilled in me.
I remember walking through grass as tall as my shoulders and feeling the love of the Creator guiding me. That love was there when the train behind our house would roar by at night, and during the day, when I played on those same tracks. That love was the source of my common sense.
Common Sense and a Gift
Common sense was the foundation of my upbringing, and it is the foundation of my teaching, because of the power it holds to build strong family values. It was the only way I got by, because I did not learn to read until my late twenties.
Here is how that changed. David Milch, the co-creator of NYPD Blue, offered me an acting role on the show, and I had to pass because I could not read. I was not ashamed to tell the truth, because I loved myself more than I protected my pride. That love created an opportunity. David gave me the gift of a lifetime. He paid for my first reading lessons and bought me a bike. It was the beginning of a long road to comprehension. Today I have written three books.
The Prize in the Mud Pile
Life may appear hard while it holds a secret prize in the mud pile of circumstance. In 2014 I had a motorcycle accident that changed my life in so many ways: money, kids, love and love lost, friends who turned out to be fake. It also brought lifelong connections that are still thriving to this day.
None of it would have happened without a solid foundation of love and compassion. That is what I teach, and it is why I wrote The Universal Principle Made Visible, Love Yourself First, and I Hear You, Love. My purpose is to make awareness of source mainstream, from the womb to the world.
